digital storytelling.
"Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Shimizu", Library of Congress
Storytelling is an extremely powerful teaching and learning tool. By incorporating digital images our stories can enhance the learning experience.
My digital story was inspired by the Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Shimizu photograph (left). At first glance it is difficult to infer the historical context and significance of this photograph. However, with further research I found that these two individuals were forced internees at Manzanar during World War II. In order to delve deeper into the story behind this photograph, I researched Ansel Adams' documentation of life at the Japanese-American interment camp at Manzanar and Adams' artistic purpose behind his project.
My digital story will serve as an example for a research project my 11th grade United States history classes will complete. The students will research an American historical figure from the World War II era and create a digital story that illustrates their research and understanding of the figure and how s/he fits into the greater historical context of World War II. Before jumping into the project, the students will be required to create a storyboard that maps out their main ideas setting the foundation for their video.
